Can You Mix Pressure Compensating and Non-Pressure Compensating Dripline in the Same System?
It’s one of the most common irrigation design questions: can you mix Pressure Compensating (PC) and Non-Pressure Compensating (Non-PC) dripline on the same field? The short answer is — not in the same irrigation zone. While both types can exist in the same system, they must be separated into zones with independent valves and flow control.
Why You Shouldn’t Mix PC and Non-PC in the Same Line
PC dripline uses internal diaphragms to maintain uniform flow, while Non-PC dripline’s output varies based on pressure. When both are installed in the same lateral or zone, the PC emitters restrict flow evenly while the Non-PC emitters release more water closer to the source and less at the far end.
The result? Uneven irrigation. Some areas become oversaturated while others receive too little water — exactly what dripline systems are meant to prevent.
- Overwatering near the inlet where pressure is highest.
- Underwatering at the far ends of Non-PC lines.
- Inconsistent plant growth and reduced yield.
When You Can Use Both in the Same System
You can, however, use both PC and Non-PC dripline in the same overall irrigation network — as long as they’re divided into separate zones controlled by different valves or timers. This setup is ideal when your farm has a combination of flat and sloped terrain.
- Use Non-PC dripline on flat fields or tunnel systems.
- Use PC dripline on uneven or hilly ground.
- Each zone should have its own pressure regulator and filtration unit.
How to Design a Mixed System Correctly
If your layout includes both sloped and flat areas, design your system so each zone receives water suited to its dripline type:
- Install isolation valves between zones to control flow independently.
- Match each zone’s pressure to its dripline type — around 1 BAR for most Afriq Drip systems.
- Label or map each zone for easier maintenance and replacement.
